My View: Teens Exposed

Standard
Recently I had a 'run in' with a lad who though it was okay to post explicit photos of his ex girlfriend online as pay back for her cheating on him. I completely disagreed.

Regardless of the gender I feel that it is never okay to share something that is meant to be so personal and private and make it completely public and place it somewhere where it will be available forever and could potentially damage their future career. Plus both parties could regret it in the future but due to where it has been put in a moment of anger they aren't able to take it back.

The moral of this story is that if it is avoidable (which in theory it is) don't share these kind of photos however, people will and do so make sure it is with someone you can completely trust and that you are aware of the risks involved afterwards.

Imagine if that was your daughter...

Poem: Just Get To Know Me

Standard
Just because I'm female
Doesn't mean I believe everything ends just like a fairytale
I see the news each night
I hear the sirens attending another deadly fight
I might be nineteen
But that doesn't mean
I live up to the stereotype I'm believed to be
I'm my own person, I'm me
Look at me from the outside, tell me what do you see

I'm just another lost human being trying to follow my path in life
But yet somehow society is telling me I should be carrying a knife
I'm telling you that's not right, its definitely not me, and I don't want to take another's life

I want to stand up and show the world that we aren't all the same
You perceive us in our teens as though we all play at life as though its a game
But trust me, take it from me, we aren't all the same

You judge me because of the negativity you see on you TV screens
You see us as all the same, truth is, we only have one thing in common, we're in our teens

Don't judge me on what you see externally
Just because I have my hood up doesn't mean you have to look at me nervously
I promise you I was brought up with good manners, I'll say please and thank you
I might forget occasionally but trust me theres people older than me that don't do it at all

Your judging me on all this negativity
That you have created by looking at a small minority
Its about time that the bigger picture was taken into consideration
Because right now there is a whole population filled with alot of frustration

So don't judge me on what you think I should be
Don't judge me on what you think you should see
It's quite simple, just get to know me

Poem: I'm Not Famous

Standard

You might not be famous but that doesn’t mean
That you didn’t have a tough time as a teen
And you didn’t have to smile when you wanted to break down and cry
Because people where asking too many questions, trying to get you to lie

Sometimes you have to stand tall
Even though you want to crumble and fall
Sometimes you’ll feel like you’re being dragged through
With everyone telling you, that you’re doing things wrong
All you can do is stand strong
The only thing getting you through day to day
Are the dreams people tell you are getting in the way

You don’t need to be famous
To achieve greatness
Just believe in yourself and you’ll get there
It doesn’t matter if people stop and stare
As long as you follow your dreams
In which you’ve always been able to believe
No matter how big or small they are
On you’ll be sure to achieve
And in your own way you’ll become a star

Poem: Do I Belong

Standard

Look at me, look at me from behind
What do you find,
Your willing to say your opinions blunt
Look at me, look at me from the front
Your not afraid to confront,
Me, for who you think I should be
Why don't you try and get to know me
Instead of judging me on what you think you can see

You're older and therefore supposedly wiser
But I wouldn't want you as my advisor
Just because one of us carries a knife
It doesn't mean that it's my life
Just because someone fires a bullet from a gun
Doesn't mean that I do it for fun

Don't make me take a step back
Just because your opinions' are on the attack
Don't crush my positivity
Simply because you want to surround me in negativity

I'm not all that different from you
I have dreams just like you do

Why is it simply because of my age you think you can judge what I do
But why is it disrespectful when I do it to you

I have to earn your respect
Just like some kind of object
But I am told I just have to give it to you
Even though you judge every little thing that I do

How is that fair
But I'm not supposed to care
Because I'm just another teenager your allowed to judge
And I'm not meant to hold a grudge

How am I supposed to feel as though I belong
When I'm made to feel as though I've always done something wrong

Poem: Give Us A Break, You Get Me

Standard
Last night was amazing I reached the final 12 in the Strawberry Slam Poetry Competition at Strawberry Fair and did my first live performance! I had such a great time and was really pleased with my score, congratulations to the two winners their poems were awesome.

Here is my poem, I merged two of my older poems together and changed them a little bit, It's called 'Give Us A Break, You Get Me'...

Teenagers, prejudice
Louts and layabouts
Times have changed
Communities rearranged
You took away the opportunities
And are now left with what you call teenage obscenities
Just like the guns and knives carried for pride
And like all the cars taken for a joyride

Looking around and all that you can see
Is the stereotype you think I should be
It doesn't mean that I'm the same
It doesn't mean that I'm too blame
Everyone focuses on the minority
Making it seem as thought they are the majority

We're people too
Just not as important as you
Apparently you're perfect
And we're the ones who are incorrect

All we need is one chance
So that out lives will advance
I shouldn't have to prove to you
That I'm just as much of a person as you

You've taken everything away
And now you've left us with the blame
Surely you can see that we're not all the same

Give us a break,
You get me
I'll post the video of my performance onto my youtube channel soon!
Let me know what you think of the poem.

Poem: I’m Just Sleeping

Standard

Plunging deep into my skin
I’m fighting a battle that I want to but can’t win
My eyes flicker and give you hope
Just as my body is shutting down, it can’t cope
The machines are beeping
You keep telling yourself that I’m just sleeping
My killer is running free
But on their conscience it’s me
In their mind I’m all that they can see

Just kiss my good night just one more time
Let’s forget this night and terrible crime
Let me give up this fight
I promise to light up the night
Be the brightest star in the sky
Just let me go, let me sleep, let me die

I promise to talk to you everyday
Even if my words you cannot hear
I promise one day we’ll be together again
I just don’t know when

What do you think?

Poem: Hood Up, Head Down

Standard

Hood up, head down
Plodding across the ground
Face mysterious
The public become curious
Hood up, head down
The misunderstood frown
Walking around
The soul never found
Hood up, head down
Strolling through the town
Ahead another rowdy crowd
All with heads bowed
Hood up, head down
Plodding across the ground
Heading home again
Tonight I have found enemy and friend
Hood up, head down
Once again...

This is the first poem I wrote which I was proud of when I was 13.

Poem: What We Are

Standard

Teenagers, prejudice
Louts and layabouts
Hoodys, scum
Times have changed
Communities rearranged
Knives carried for pride
Cars taken for a joy ride
You only see the bad
All the things that make us mad
You want us to change
But we can’t
It’s how you make us today
We need opportunities
Some sense of responsibilities
We are the youth of today
But we can’t repay to the communities
You’ve taken everything away
Then leave us with the blame

Give us a break,
You get me?

Poem: Not Ready To Leave

Standard

Staring at my beating heart
I’m not ready to leave
Not yet
Sharp and so powerful
Plunging deep
I’m not ready to leave
Not yet
You were just a stranger
Eyes filled with danger
So forceful, you’ll never be remorseful
I’m not ready to leave
Not yet
Maybe this is my end
A kitchen utensil
Taken all chance
For a happy ending
I wasn’t ready to leave
But I guess I’ll have to be

This poem came from several news stories about knife crime.

What do you think?

Poem: You Might Surprise Yourself

Standard

Race, Place
Black, White
Tall, Small
Fat, Thin
Cheating, Beating
Dreaming, Screaming
Hoping, Praying
Crying, Lying, Dying
Teenagers, prejudice
Guns, Knives
Louts, layabout
Hoodys, scum

Don't stereotype me
Don't tell me who I should be
I see all the problems you see
Don't try and blame them on me
Times have changed
Communties rearranged
Knives carried for pride
Cars taken for a joy ride
You only see the bad
All the things that make us mad
You want us to change
You call us strange
We need opportunities
Some sense of responsibilities
A way to repay the communities
You've taken everything away
Then leave us with the blame

Teenage pregnancies
Dangers and obscenities
Guns and knives
So many have lost their lives
Lost and gone
But never forgotten

Don't just give them a passing glance
Give them another chance
A helping hand might be all they need
Listen to their opinions you might surprise yourself, you might not disagree

Let me know what you think

Poem: I’m Not Afraid

Standard

Don’t stereotype me
Please don’t tell me who I should be
In my head I know
And that’s how my personality is going to grow
I see all the problems you see
Don’t try and blame them on me
The streets have a voice
Every person has a choice
Decide what path their going to take
What laws their going to break
Nobody will force the weapon in their hand
Buts lets join together and make a stand
Guide them to the right way
It’s your turn to be a role model today
Take some responsibilities
Don’t be blaming us for all the controversies

We drive you to the brink
Day after day you see another turn to the drink
I’ll stand up for those without a voice
I’ll stand up for those without a choice
I’m proud to be different
Not like all the others up the duff you know, pregnant
I’m at college everyday
Are you getting what I’m trying to say?
I’m not like them
Most of their choices I don’t condemn
Not smoking, not ever
Have I taken drugs? No never
Don’t judge what you don’t understand
That’s why I’m making a stand and raising my stand
I’ve got a voice
And I’m making my choice

Let me know what you think.

Poem: Crying For Help

Standard

The streets are littered with so many teenage pregnancies
Along with many other dangers and obscenities
Knives and guns carried for pride
Cars not owned, just used while on a joyride
Lives filled with drama
Police head to foot in armour
The people you hang with is a statement
Flowers and crying eyes a constant reminder of the bereavement
Pouring into the street day after day
A society crying for help
Instead sent into a shock everyday
As another town is on its own

Let me know what you think!

Poem: Changing Times

Standard

Chocolate, sweets and treats
Falling from the sky
The sound of children’s laughter
Right into the distance
This is how it used to be

Guns, knives and violence
From the hands of teenagers
The sound of victims screams
Right into the distance
This is what it’s turning to be

The time is changing
The sound is changing
The lives are ending

Novel: The Beginning

Standard

The sun was just setting, casting its bright orange glow across the buildings of the once busy town. As 6 o’clock was approaching, many figures could be seen filling the streets to celebrate the end of the week, varying in ages, and all scattering like ants down various alleyways heading towards their individual destinations. As the darkness of the night loomed, a figure could be seen making his way down a narrow cul-de-sac: his face was obscured by a hooded jacket pulled tightly over his head; a distinctive white wire was hanging from the pocket of his tight black skinny jeans; his slow walk was made even more obvious by the crystal white trainers gripping to his feet. This solitary figure was oblivious to everything around him, including the black cat crossing his path just several paces ahead, continuing in his journey like many other young people.

As the darkly dressed figure crossed the deserted road from between two blood red parked cars he noticed a looming shadow over his shoulder. Without trying to draw attention to himself he quickened his pace and hunched his shoulder slightly more. He tried to gain on the group of school friends just a couple of paces ahead just as he went to step into sink with them they disappeared into the local recreation ground. The unknown figure seemed to decide that he would carry on his journey following his original path quicken his pace even more to try and outrun the shadow closing in on him. As the darkly dressed figure rounded the corner of the road, a shiny object flashed across in his view held by a gloved hand that had appeared from the body that owned the shadow.

The dark, deserted cul-de-sac was flooded with flashing lights, screaming sirens mixed with the cries and screams of the young people crowded alongside the wailing ambulance. More people were being attracted to the c

ommotion of the brightly lit scene trying to get a better view to find out what was going on, many where whispering trying to piece together a story to find out what was happening in the centre of the crowd of darkly dressed people. The same questions could be heard echoing through the crowd, ‘who was it?’, ‘what was happening?’, and ‘why had the ambulance been called?’

With what seemed like hours later the crowd started to part slowly, emerging through the crowd was a surgical trolley with a body covered by a crystal white sheet, a deep red patch was seeping through it and slowly it became apparent to the crowd present what had happened that night. The whole crowd that had gathered, turned and watched in silence as the trolley passed through the crowd and entered the screaming ambulance. For several minutes after the ambulance had disappeared into the night the crowd remained silent, the shock had taken all of them, one of them had gone and would never come back, and this thought was being played over and over by everyone it could almost be read through their eyes fixed to the place where they were standing. Slowly people started to walk away from the scene in groups of two or three all still remaining silent trying to digest what they had just witnessed, trying to unwind that nights events.

***

The next morning as the sun was rising the new day hadn’t wiped the night’s events from the town; a glowing sun wasn’t able to erase the previous night’s events from the grieving community. Where the silent crowd had stood only a few hours ago: a solitary uniformed police officer stood guard of the scene; flowers now lined the road and the pavement blocking any way through; a few people all standing reading the messages people had written, tears running down the tracks on the cheeks of the strangers united in grieving for the loss of a member of their community.

Tell me what you think of this. Trying my hand at writing a book, this is what I’ve come up with so far, some editing needs to be done but tell me what you think so far.
